Patton Oswalt Adds A New Chapter To ‘Firefly’ Universe With ‘Serenity: Float Out’

Posted 3/8/10 7:31 pm ET by Rick Marshall in Dark Horse, Hot Stuff, News Much like his "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" universe, the world of Joss Whedon's space-based series "Firefly" still manages to live on long after the final episode aired. In June, actor/comedian Patton Oswalt will add yet another chapter to the "Firefly" universe with a one-shot comic titled "Serenity: Float Out," picking up where the 2005 film left off. Written by Oswalt with interior art by Patric Reynolds and a cover by "Buffy" artist Jo Chen, "Float Out" explores how the end of one character's life spins out into the beginning of a new chapter in the "Serenity" universe. "Post-'Serenity,' a bunch of Wash's friends who we haven't met on the show, they're basically buying a new ship and christening it," said Oswalt of how the death of Serenity's pilot, Wash (played by Alan Tudyk), plays into the comic. "It’s called a 'float-out' when you christen a ship." "As they’re christening a new [...]

Spider-Man fired! So how does superhero fight crime when he can’t pay bills?

Published Tuesday March 2nd, 2010 John Rogers, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - Time to dust off that resume, Spider-Man. You're fired! Don't fret, the web-slinger will still be keeping New York City safe from Venom and Carnage and any number of other dastardly villains he's tangled with over the years. But beginning Wednesday, he's going to have to do it between trips to the unemployment line. That's the day Peter Parker, Spider-Man's nice guy alter-ego, hears the words, "You're fired" from his cranky, long-suffering boss, Mayor J. Jonah Jameson. Worse still, Jameson not only sacks Parker, who makes his living as a photojournalist, he blacklists him with every news organization in town. This of course raises all kinds of interesting questions: -How will Parker maintain his Spider-Man costumes? Dry-cleaning bills alone must run to several hundred dollars a year. -How will he keep buying the stuff he uses to spin those industrial-strength webs needed to hop from building to building? Surely he doesn't pick [...]

Superman’s debut comic book, printed in 1938, sells in NYC for record-shattering $1 million

Published Monday February 22nd, 2010 Jake Coyle, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - A rare copy of the first comic book featuring Superman sold Monday for $1 million, smashing the previous record price for a comic book. A 1938 edition of Action Comics No. 1, widely considered the Holy Grail of comic books, was sold by a private seller to a private buyer, neither of whom released their names. The issue features Superman lifting a car on its cover and originally cost 10 cents. The transaction was conducted by the auction site ComicConnect.com. Stephen Fishler, co-owner of the site and its sister dealership, Metropolis Collectibles, orchestrated the sale. Fishler said it transpired minutes after the issue was put on sale at around 10:30 a.m. Eastern time. He said that the seller was a "well-known individual" in New York with a pedigree collection and that the buyer was a known customer who previously bought an Action Comics No. 1 of lesser grade. "It's considered by most [...]
